Soham Dave Aligned Indigo Dress
Soham Dave’s Aligned Indigo Dress is a sweet little twirl of old-world craft and uptown style. This adorable little sundress is made out of vertical panels of hand-dyed indigo cotton, with a flattering above-the-knee flared hem, and flirty spaghetti straps. I have to admit it’s not usually MY style, but once I slipped it over my head I didn’t want to take it off. The cotton is very thin and soft, which is key for a summer dress, and the dress itself is quite versatile. When it first arrived I wanted to wear it right away but didn’t have a strapless bra, so I just pulled a ribbed underwear tank over the top of the dress and created a whole new look for myself. (I’ve also worn it with the tank under the dress.) I love the material—it’s unlike anything I’ve seen this season. Soham Dave, the designer behind the brand, grew up in India where he learned about textile production from family artisans. He makes his fabric the old fashioned way; it's handwoven and colored with natural plant dyes. The prints are created using carved wooden blocks. The Aligned Indigo dress is constructed out of several panels of alternative patterns—a flowered design and a polka dot design—that combine to create a fun little frock that’s not frilly but fashionable. Eco Creds: company uses recycled materials, creates biodegradable fabrics, fair trade. Sizes S-L. The dress is actually a bit longer than it appears to be in the photos on the Soham Dave site. I’m very tall, and found the dress to be long enough in length. Bottom Line: It’s nice to have a dress that’s casual enough for every day wear but unique enough that I feel special when I wear it.--E.D. (May 2011) BUY ONLINE : $80, click to shop.
