Shrug by Christine Chaney
At my age I don't like wearing clothes that are too fitted or too flowy. Too fitted and I feel hemmed in. Too flowy, and I look matronly. So imagine my surprise when I found a Christine Chaney "jacket' (called the Shrug) that combines a little bit of each...with wonderful results. Sometimes I need a little cover over a tank, but I don't want that frumpy cardigan look. The Shrug, a fun creation from Christine Chaney's resconstrucTEES line, is the perfect little top. It's snug-fitting through the shoulders and short sleeves, with a lovely roll-down collar. The lower half of the Shrug flares out and has an uneven hem, which emphasizes the front of the jacket. Each side ends in a long, curly panel of fabric that tapers to a V-shaped drape of fabric.
So, I get a nice, neat look as well as some movement. It's an ingenious combination. The Shrug also has pockets, which are essential for me. It's been the perfect "jacket" over a tank or sundress on cool nights. Like all the tops in the collection, the Shrug is made out of pre-loved men's size XXL T-shirts. I took several sewing classes when I was young, but I still can't figure out how Chaney comes up with her designs. She strikes a perfect balance between elegant and easy. Eco Creds: made out of recycled cotton T-shirts, materials and production are in the same location. You'll have to makes some calls or visit Seattle to purchase an original Christine Chaney creation. Her clothing is sold at Nube Green on Capitol Hill, Velouria in Ballard, and at Queen Anne Dispatch on Queen Anne Hill. Check out her website to see her other fashions. She also makes gorgeous halter tops and dresses out of silk scarves. Bottom Line: I love this one-of-kind top! The style is quite flattering, and it's a versatile piece.--E.D.
