Preloved Marguerita Apron : Reclaim Your Place in the Kitchen
I'm not a very good cook, and I haven't baked anything in years (unless you count heating up frozen pizza), but I do know how important it is to wear an apron when I'm in the kitchen so I don't ruin my fancy clothes. I have very fond memories of hanging out in the kitchen, watching my Swedish grandmother bake cookies in her housecoat-style apron. Of course, she made that, too, as well as a variety of other aprons that my mother kept in a large drawer next to the sink. I used to love picking out my helper apron....it made me feel legit. Now that I'm a big girl with my own kitchen, I have a darling little apron by Preloved, a Canadian apparel company that makes garments "consciously created from reclaimed fabrics." Those fabrics might be scraps, excess, used garments, vintage fabrics, and even old bed sheets. My Marguerita Apron (pictured top left, click on image to see full-sized photo) is made out of a denim shirt and a pink, green, and yellow flower motif sheet. The buttons of the top run along the left side of the apron and the button holes run along the ride side. The former chest pocket, which has a button closure, is located on the button hole side--convenient for me since I'm right handed. Pockets are essential on almost all garments (my grandmother's aprons all had pockets).
The waistband is about two inches thick and plenty long enough for me to tie the apron around my waist. The apron is pleated across the top where it's attached to the waistband and has a pleated ruffle out of the same bed sheet along the bottom. (The apron pictured at left is the Lolita Apron.) My Marguerita Apron is one-of-a kind, or at least one of few since there's a limit to how many waistbands you can make out of one bed sheet! It's so adorable that's it's fun to wear, and it actually makes me want to get into the kitchen and create something fancy to eat. The apron is part of Preloved's Home Collection. They also make fancy women's fashions, including some sweet dresses and chic tops. It's sort of like in Pretty in Pink when Molly Ringwald's character tore apart two prom dresses to create another one...except that Preloved's dresses are so much cooler! (Sorry for the top photo -- couldn't find anyone to take a photo of me wearing the apron at posting time!) Eco Creds: Repurposed fabrics and materials, made in Canada. Bottom Line: I have to love a company that creates beautiful things out of leftovers. My grandmother would totally approve of their resourcefulness and style.--E.D.
