Planet 2x Ultra Laundry Detergent : Super Clean, Super Conscious

I'm glad that the housing cooperative I live in has switched to front-loading washing machines; now I wish I could convince all the residents to use more earth- and human-friendly laundry detergents.

Every time someone washes their clothes, the stink of chemically fragranced detergent wafts up from the basement and in through my windows. It's disgusting, it makes me gag with asthma, and it burns my eyes. Yuck.

Lucky for me, I have my own mini front loader in my unit, as well as the good sense to use healthier cleaning products. Lately I've been washing my clothes with Planet brand 2x Ultra Laundry Detergent. It's designed for high efficiency machines and it's concentrated, so a little dab 'll do ya! Because I have a small, European washer, I use even less than that. A bonus because I end up using less and having to buy more less often. Another bonus - smaller packaging means less waste.

This low-sudsing formula has done a great job of cleaning my clothes. They come out of the washer clean, but scent-free -- just the way I like it. The scent-free detergent is made out of corn and coconut oil based cleaners, and it's biodegradable. I like that my clothes get clean, even in cold water washes, and there's no lingering smell of anything.

The 50oz bottles yield 32 loads, but already I can tell that I'll get many more than that. Because my machine is so efficient and small, I use much less detergent than recommended. It doesn't take much to clean a full load.

I recently had a mishap with a green pen. I left it uncapped in my bed, then slept on it all night. I woke up with ink-stained sheets and worse, green spots all over my favorite purple sleeping shirt. Ink stains are notoriously hard to get rid off, and more than one dry cleaner has told me not to use water to remove them. But I have a secret weapon--an eco-friendly stain remover that works wonders. I applied the stain formula to all the green spots, then tossed it in the wash. When I took out the wash later, I couldn't believe it -- no more green spots - not even a trace. I attribute some of the success to the Planet detergent because I have had ink stains before that have taken two or three washes to completely remove the ink. Next job -- those sheets.

Eco Creds: fragrance-free, dye-free, no brighteners, not tested on animals, packaging is 40% and 100% recyclable, biodegradable.

Bottom Line: A back-to-basics detergents that doesn't leave any residue on my clothes and does a great job at cleaning.--E.D. (Jan 10)
