One Potato Blue Shoulder Bag : A Baby Bag for Moms

Soon after my son was born, I started to have bag envy. We'd go to the mothers' group that started up in January, and the first thing I noticed (okay, the second thing--I noticed the cute babies first) were the great diaper bags the other moms had.

My husband and I had picked out a serviceable bag that both of us would feel comfortable carrying but over time I started realizing that I was the one who was going to be spending the most quality time with our diaper bag. I searched for a while, but never found what I was looking for, so I settled on repurposing a purse I already had.  

Until now, that is. Since One Potato Blue's canvas tote bag arrived on my doorstep for testing, my old diaper bag's only view has been the inside of my closet door.

It's hard to say what I like best.   The shoulder straps are a perfect length; I can sling the bag over my shoulder while I'm carrying my son in a pack (something I couldn't do with my other bag). This bag is just the right size, with enough room for all the diaper essentials (changing pad, wipes, diapers, wet bag) and a change of clothes, but it's not so big that I start trying to haul too much. A few smaller, interior pockets make it easy to grab my wallet or cell phone.  

I like what I've heard about the company, too. One Potato Blue started out making reusable fabric gift bags, reducing paper waste (and encouraging the reuse of the patterned wrapping for another gift). These bags are handmade in Utah, where founder Katherine Hughes employs several sew-at-home moms to make the shoulder bags.  

And, well, the bags look great. You'll find no rattles, ducklings, or tiny teddy bears, but mod-looking patterns with whimsical charm all their own. I guess that's what I like best--the bag is so darn cute, I can't wait to go to my next mothers' group.
