Nau Confidant Short

Wow. Nau has done it again with their women’s Confidant Short.  Design: perfect. Fit: perfect. Fabric: perfect.

I’m not surprised, of course, just happy that I have another Nau item to cherish for years to come.  My fashion goal is to look like an urban gal at all times but still have clothes that’ll work hard.

Nau does an excellent job of designing sleek, durable, ultra stylish clothes. Who wants to look frumpy around town in baggy shorts?  Or around the camp site, for that matter?  Not me. Just take a look at the angled front pockets, the precision stitching, and the slim back pockets. Everything is clean and lean.

I never feel like a hiker in my Confidant shorts, but I can wear them on the trail.  I can wear them around town with boots and a tee, for a bike ride with tennies and a tank, out for dinner with a blouse and black sandals, or anywhere else I want to go.

What I love most about the Confidant short is the deceptively simple design.  Nau doesn’t put in a waistband but instead finishes off the top of the pant with a very subtle taper.  That type of construction means the pants fit where they fit—which is most likely different for every person.  So, I get to wear the pants on my hips and the next lady gets to wear them where they fit her best.  There’s no waistband to fit into.  I can’t tell you what a difference this makes in comfort and fit.  My grandmother, who was an expert seamstress, used to say that all pants should be made this way.  She was right.

I also love the dark grey fabric; it’s 96% merino wool with 4% lycra so the Confidant Shorts have some give. I wore these shorts almost every day on my recent vacation, and they were fabulous. Merino breathes well, wicks well, and more important, doesn’t hold on to odor.  So, I was able to wear them for days--despite the hot weather--before washing.  Even when I was a sweaty mess, my shorts still looked tidy!

Eco Creds: merino wool is a renewable resource.

Available in 2-14, in Ash Plaid or Smoke Heather.

Bottom Line: Classic design and quality fabric, with some Nau magic thrown in, make this my favorite short of the season.--E.D. (May 2011)
