Lunchsense Lunchbox : So Much More Than PB&J
While strolling the aisles at the San Francisco Greenfest last month, a display of colorful lunchboxes caught my eye, so I stopped to talk to the nice people at Lunchsense Lunchbox. A few weeks later, they sent me a medium-sized purple lunchbox to review. Just my luck - my favorite color. My Lunchsense Lunchbox is sporty, durable, and won't burst open if I drop it. All essential qualities in a food container. At first I found the box design a bit confusing, but once I read the instructions and slowly took apart the carrying case, it all made sense. Lunchsense uses a super strong brand of closure snaps that do not come apart unless you make them. (And if you don't read the instructions, you won't learn the trick to opening them.) Once I get the main container open, I can continue unsnapping it until I have a personal place mat on which to eat my fancy lunch. I think mothers (and germophobes who worry about eating in public places) will love this feature. The outer case comes with a removable, adjustable shoulder strap for convenient carrying.
The lunchbox I tested came with six items: a main food container that holds 2.3 cups of pasta or rice salad, a sandwich, or, a piece of salmon and a curried chickpea salad (the container has two inner cups to divide it if I want to); a small container for salad dressing; two 6 oz. containers for chopped up fruits and veggies; a leak proof 8oz Nalgene bottle for water; and a mini Freez Pak to keep my lunch cold. Of course, you can pack whatever your favorite foods are. I really like the storage containers because they're airtight and watertight. Just to make sure the inner seal holds, each box has large, easy to use clips that click into the locked position. Just to make sure this system really worked, I filled one with water and shook it and shook it and shook it -- and not a drop escaped. The containers are made by Lock & Lock, which claims they are odor proof and stain resistant. So far, so good, but I've only been using the kit for about a month. The boxes are dishwasher safe, which is key, and they can be put the in the freezer. You can also use them in the microwave. (Also, they're made out of number 5 plastic, so if you ever get tired of them, check out the Preserve company; they make housewares out of recycled #5 plastic. Eco Creds: Products do not contain PVC, BPA, or lead. Reusable, recyclable. Another great thing about using this lunchbox system -- no more plastic sandwich bags or paper bags. Less waste, better food options, and my own personal eating space. What a civilized way to eat. Boxes come in three sizes and in a variety of bold colors. Lunchsense also sells accessories, such as the food containers. Shop at Amazon below, or at the Lunchsense site, link below.
Bottom Line: This kit is bulky, but worth it. I like that I can pack the foods I like because of the Freez Pak, and I like that the containers won't spill. This is a great product for anyone who carries a lunch. --E.D. (Dec 09) Buy Online: $35-44---shop at Amazon Manufacturer's Site: www.lunchsense.com
