Kelty Saunter Messenger Bag

Long ago I converted much of my outside gear to man-made materials. Made sense for apparel. Spending a camping trip soaking in my cotton clothes taught me that lesson very quickly. I also liked the durability and light weight of nylon packs and bags.

Still, I've missed the feel and heft of cotton, especially for my urban bags. The Kelty Saunter Messenger Bag is a updated take on my favorite materials -- it looks and feels like it's made out of heavy canvas, but the material is actually 60% recycled polyester. (Truth be told, I thought it was canvas until my editor told me otherwise.)

The straps are made out of vegetable tanned leather, and the few pieces of hardwear--the buckles--are fashioned out of aluminum. The Sanuter has an old mail-pilot look to it, with a new generation of moisture protection.

The coated material keeps the gear in my bag dry. I like that. There are two compartments: one for all kinds of bulky stuff, with a sleeve for storing my laptop, and another for books and notepads. Under the big flap are two wee pouches for my frequently needed little items.

The thing that leapt out at me during my very first use was the bag's bright yellow lining. We've all dug around and around in a big bag like this, only to have to dump everything out on the floor to find the keys, cell phone, brush, breath mints, wallet, or license and registration. You don't need direct sunlight or a flashlight to find your stuff - the contrast inside is fantastic.

Bottom Line:  When I'm cycling I sling this retro-styled bag over my shoulder, and go. It carries the essentials and more, and I'm covered if the weather people get it wrong. Bonus--the Saunter comes with a free fold-up tote for grocery shopping.--C.H. (Feb 09)
