Growing Green Babies : Educational TV for Parents
I have to admit, the DVD Growing Green Babies sat around our house for a few weeks. I was interested in the DVD, but with an infant, everything happens so fast--and I found that sitting down to watch a show about making green choices for my little one didn't mix with having a real live five-month-old. Then I got the five-month-old's cold. Suddenly, I was in bed, surrounded by balled-up tissues--and stationary long enough to do more than check out the hip recycled packaging (a DVD case that's not yucky and didn't have hard-to-open plastic--I liked it already). The premise: Eco-lifestyle expert Sara Snow (you may have seen her on the Discovery networks, hosting Living Fresh and Get Fresh with Sara Snow ) talks expectant and new moms through nutrition, nursery design, diapers, and more. She leads viewers through the supermarket and the kids' shops, pointing out which purchases are friendlier for the planet. Then she takes the viewer back to her/his own kitchen to whip up healthy treats. I liked that she gave pointers on how to make green home remedies and cleaning products from common items I already have in the house. While Growing Green Babies may be most helpful for prospective parents new to sustainable living, even eco geeks might find a new tip or two. I felt smug when the organic mattress Snow approved was the very same brand that had been sitting in our crib for months and when she held up the cloth diapers we use. I groaned when she called out the bad plastics in rubber duckies. Bye-bye, bath time friends. For me one of the bonuses of watching this DVD is that many of the green suggestions Snow offers are also money-saving tips. For instance, Snow suggests streamlining spending on pricey organic produce by focusing on the eliminating the dirty dozen (the top pesticide-carrying fruits and veggies) and swapping out those foods for organic items. Tips I'll try: cucumber juice for under-eye circles, a vinegar solution for household cleaning, and a yummy looking pumpkin banana bread that Snow whips up on-air. The DVD also contains pre- and post-natal workouts one can do at home. My advice: watch this while you're still pregnant and have time. (Running Time: 113 minutes).
