Ella Vickers Green Grocery Bag : Sail at the Farmer's Market
Finally, bringing my own bag is hip--so I might as well have something that's functional and stylish, too. Enter the Ella Vickers Green Grocery bag, which holds much more than the standard paper grocery bag. Made from recycled sails, these white bags (mine has a blue number 8 on it) won't just appeal to nautical types, but anyone looking for a sturdy bag that can hoist heavy loads without ripping or sagging. I tested the bag out in two demanding shopping locales--the Berkeley Bowl, in Berkeley, CA, known for its amazing produce and savvy (read: aggressive) shoppers, and the farmers market at San Francisco's Ferry Building. At the Berkeley Bowl, the bag lugged a huge load from the store to where I'd parked a few blocks away--the webbed straps were comfortable and sturdy as I carried the bag in one hand. Navigating the crowded farmers market, I slung the bag over my shoulder; it didn't feel bulky or take out nearby shoppers with its girth (although I confess, I did much more sampling than shopping). Once I got home, the vinyl inside the bag made it easy to wipe up spills from squished strawberries and melting pints of ice cream. It also worked well as a swim bag, standing up to wet suits and towels with ease. In fact, it's so versatile that I end up using it to cart around just about everything.
