Elemental Herbs Bug Me Not Lotion : Bye, Bye, Mosquitoes!

Minnesota, land of of 10,000 lakes, is also home to millions of bad-ass mosquitoes. I've never met such persistent bugs. In fact, these bugs were one reason I moved away from this fair land almost 18 years ago (the other reason was the weather).

Still, I like to visit. So, this year I brought my Bug Me Not lotion by Elemental Herbs. I met the owner of this eco body care company at the Seattle Greenfest a few months ago, and have been eager to visit bugland to give their repellant a try. I figured if it works in MN, it's got to be good.

First off, I love the natural ingredients. Bug Me Not contains pure grape seed oil, shea butter, extracts of rosemary and of grapefruit seed, vitamin E, and organic essential oils of rose geranium, lemongrass, cedarwood, and tangerine. It has a fresh, lemony scent that is pleasant and stimulating.

I also love the consistency of this lotion -- smooth, silky, and easy to apply. It's never greasy on my skin. Unlike bug products with chemicals, this natural concoction feels like lotion I'd buy at a spa. Love that. It also comes in a travel-sized bottle that's lasted well during my month-long vacation (and has never leaked during my many comings and goings). I love that I don't feel like I have to wash it off when I come home at night. Because it's made out of natural ingredients, there's no toxic, sticky residue or icky smell. My skin feels soft and moisturized; I don't even remember it's on.

Most important, no bites. Not once in four weeks. So, the nice-smelling, organic lotion actually works. What a victory for all of us who are trying to show the eco wary that it's possible to make effective products without using chemicals. And for the many people like me who are allergic to body products made with chemicals.

I was walking around Lake of the Isles last week with my friends. About half-way around the lake they both commented on how buggy it was (as they swatted at their legs). I just laughed and said, "I don't know what you mean - no bugs on me."

Eco Creds: organic ingredients, 1% For The Planet, bottles are recyclable, tested on humans.

Bottom Line: I love this herbal insect repellent. It's effective and it's natural. I'd buy it as a lotion even if it didn't repel bugs.--E.D.

"If 10 percent of U.S. households made a onetime purchase of lotion bottle without an attached pump, the plastic saved would be an estimated 250,000 pounds--enough lotion pumps to fill nearly 1,200 tanning booths from floor to ceiling."
