Avalon Organics Grapefruit & Gernamium Deodorant Spray : Freshen Your Pits and Your Room
I love the idea of switching from mainstream, chemical-laden body products to more natural, chemical-free alternatives, but there are some products you just don't want to take the chance on, such as deodorant and toothpaste (unless you love wearing perfume and eating mints all day)! Avalon Organics makes a refreshing spray-on deodorant that's aluminum-free and comes in a variety of essential oil-scented formulations. Before I being, please keep in mind that you can't compare a deodorant to an antiperspirant because they are not the same. Once sweat glands secrete through your underarm skin and mix with air and bacteria, they will create a smell. Deodorant will only cover the smell. Antiperspirant will help prevent some or most sweat from secreting through your underarm skin in the first place, thus eliminating most of the smell associated with sweating. The day I decided to try the Avalon Organics deodorant spray I had light activity planned, such as running errands, working at my desk for a while, and meeting up with a friend for dinner. I sprayed it on my underarms after I dried off from the shower, and it smelled really good. (The grapefruit & geranium plant oils in this particular spray make me feel fresh and energetic. All of the formulations contain alcohol and a variety of organic essential oils.) I got dressed and started my day. Throughout the day, when no one was looking of course, I took a quick sniff in the area of my underarms to see if it was working. By noon, so far so good. But I noticed towards the end of my day when I went to meet up for dinner with my friend, I was starting to smell that faint odor of underarm sweat. I didn't bring the deodorant spray with me, so I couldn't freshen up in the parking lot before I met up with my friend. Overall, I do like the idea of using a more organic deodorant product, but I think this particular product, as with most deodorants (as opposed to antiperspirants), is one that I'll use on light activity days. Because it's small, I'll also be tossing it into my bag so I can have it with me for those end-of-the-day sweeten-ups. Something else about this product: I noticed on the bottle that it says it can also be used as a room freshener. Great idea! Now I always squirt some around the bathroom after hitting my underarms with it. Editor's Note: I've been using the Lavender and the Peppermint and Rosemary versions of AO's Deodorant Spray. I have to admit, thought, that I use these sprays on top of a fragrance-free mineral deodorant because I have the stinkiest armpits ever - even 30 minutes after I shower. I also use the sprays all over my body after showering and as a room spray just before guests arrive. I like to spray my bed and bedroom with the Lavender spray before bed. So, I'm getting a lot of use out of these natural essential oil deodorants. Eco Creds: paraben-free, no aluminum, propylene glycol, synthetic fragrances, or harsh preservatives, 100% vegetarian, no animal testing. Bottom Line: All-natural, essential oil scented deodorant that's easy to use and has multiple uses.--N.S.
